🧼 Rug Care Guide

Your Anthrofy wool rug is a timeless investment, handcrafted by artisans with care. With the right maintenance, it will stay beautiful and durable for years. This guide covers care tips for our two primary rug types: Hand-Tufted Wool Rugs and Hand-Knotted Wool Rugs.

General Wool Rug Care Tips

  • Rotate your rug every 6–12 months to ensure even wear and prevent fading.
  • Vacuum regularly using a suction-only vacuum (avoid beater bars or brushes).
  • Address spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth—blot, don’t rub.
  • Use a rug pad underneath to extend life, prevent slipping, and allow airflow.
  • Keep rugs out of direct sunlight where possible to minimize color fading.

🪄 Hand-Tufted Wool Rugs

Hand-tufted rugs are crafted by punching strands of wool into a canvas backing. They are durable and plush, but require specific care to maintain their appearance.

✅ Regular Maintenance

  • Vacuuming: Use a suction-only vacuum once or twice a week. Avoid using a rotating brush to prevent yarn pull-out.
  • Shedding: Shedding is normal for the first few months. It will reduce over time with regular vacuuming.
  • Rug Pad: Always place a rug pad beneath to protect the backing and reduce stress on the tufting glue.

💧 Spot Cleaning

  • Immediately blot spills with a clean, white cloth.
  • For liquid stains, use lukewarm water mixed with a drop of mild wool detergent. Blot gently, then pat dry.
  • Never saturate the rug; excess water may loosen the adhesive holding the tufts.

🧽 Deep Cleaning

  • Hand-tufted rugs should not be fully immersed in water.
  • Professional cleaning is recommended every 12–18 months, using a method safe for tufted rugs (no harsh scrubbing or soaking).
  • Avoid steam cleaning, which can damage the latex glue in the backing.

⚠️ Special Care Notes

  • Tufted rugs may show loops coming loose. Do not pull them—trim with scissors at pile height.
  • Keep away from high humidity areas (bathrooms, basements) to prevent glue deterioration.

🪢 Hand-Knotted Wool Rugs

Hand-knotted rugs are masterpieces made entirely by hand, knot by knot, often taking months to complete. They are highly durable and heirloom-quality when cared for properly.

✅ Regular Maintenance

  • Vacuuming: Vacuum weekly using a suction-only vacuum. For fringes, use a handheld vacuum or shake gently—never pull or use a beater bar.
  • Rotation: Rotate every 6 months to prevent uneven wear from foot traffic and sunlight.
  • Rug Pad: Use a quality pad to prevent slipping and protect the foundation knots.

💧 Spot Cleaning

  • Blot spills immediately—never scrub, as it may push stains deeper into fibers.
  • For stains, mix a small amount of white vinegar and water (50/50). Lightly dab with a clean cloth and blot dry.
  • Wool is naturally stain-resistant; act quickly to preserve this property.

🧽 Deep Cleaning

  • Professional hand-washing is recommended every 2–3 years, depending on use.
  • Avoid dry cleaning or steam cleaning—these can strip natural lanolin oils from the wool.
  • Ensure cleaners specialize in hand-knotted rugs to protect the delicate knots and foundation.

⚠️ Special Care Notes

  • Fringes are delicate—avoid vacuuming or pulling them. If tangled, gently untwist by hand.
  • Hand-knotted rugs can last generations; minor wear adds character but can be professionally restored if needed.
  • If storing, roll (do not fold) and wrap in breathable cotton or muslin cloth. Avoid plastic which traps moisture.

🌟 Additional Protection Tips

  • Pets: Trim pet nails regularly and use training to reduce scratching or chewing.
  • Humidity: Wool rugs thrive in moderate humidity. Use a dehumidifier in damp environments.
  • Furniture: Use furniture coasters or felt pads to prevent crushing of fibers.
